1. Describe your local soil structure: is it a mollisol? Ultimisol? Be specific about its characteristics.
2. Discuss the role of macroinvertebrates in soil formation and cycling, specifically in temperate hardwood forests.
3. While some animals (like snakes) get through the cold months by ” hibernating” , why do some non-homeothermic organisms (like aquatic insects) stay active throughout the year?
4. Since soils are a combination of both biotic and abiotic features, describe how your local geologic landscape influences your local soils. Would two areas with the same geologic history and similar climates have the same soils? Why/ why not?
