An interaction is when two or more variables are placed in a situation to see if there is correlation in between the two or more variables. One variable needs to be able to react with another variable to determine if there is any statistical interaction. In the end, there has to be a main effect at the end of the study that shows no interaction or that shows an interaction. An example can be seen when two patients are coming into the hospital for the complaint of constipation, both given two different forms of medication (senna and colace). Input variables would include age, diet; past medical history and any current medications they are on, where the dependent variable would include the constipation.
